Crayon Melt Artwork

Crayon melt artwork is so much fun!

When I was little, and my Mom was a preschool teacher, she had a hot plate covered with foil where you could make crayon melt artwork in her preschool class. And it was ALWAYS my favorite thing to do! My kids favorite too!

This art project is similar and so much fun!

You will need adult supervision and help for this one, and it is not a project for the littlest of hands.

Supplies:

Iron
Paper
Crayons
Grater
Cheese Slicer
Wax Paper or Parchment paper

Directions:

To make your crayon melt art begin by taking the paper off of your crayons.

When you have removed the paper then you can create a “galaxy effect” or abstract art by grating the crayon all over your paper using different colors and sized pieces of crayon, or you can create a specific shape.

To create a specific shape: lightly trace the outline of the shape that you would like to form. Begin by grating the pieces of your crayon into the inside of your outline. We used the cheese slicer for the shapes because it grated larger chunks and was easier to control where the pieces landed.

The crayon shavings will spread as they melt, so the image does NOT need to be full! You should still see white (see below image). Once you have grated enough pieces of crayon, use your finger to gently place the crayon shaving inside your outline (see image below right).

Next, place a piece of wax paper on your ironing board. Place your crayon art on top of the wax paper. Place a second piece of wax paper on top of your artwork and with the iron gently iron from on top of the wax paper. Press the crayon pieces gently into the shape that you desire to create.

If a corner is missing or the shape is crooked, no worries! Just add a few more shaving and iron that corner again!
